Cadet. The foundation.

The beginner division of Australian STEM Racing — built to introduce students to the competition before stepping up to Development or Professional. Focus on the fundamentals of aerodynamics, CAD, manufacturing and teamwork.

The Cadet class in Australian STEM Racing is the beginner division designed to introduce students to the competition in a simpler and more manageable way before moving into higher classes like Development or Professional.

Teams are limited to 3 members, so each person usually takes on multiple roles such as engineer, designer, manager, or graphic designer. The competition mainly runs at a state level, meaning teams compete within their region rather than progressing to nationals.

Cars in Cadet have restricted modifications compared to higher classes — students still design, manufacture and race. Judging focuses on the engineering process, teamwork, communication, and how students apply STEM skills.

The class is meant to build experience and confidence so students can later transition into more advanced divisions with larger teams, deeper engineering, and national-level competition. Cadet is basically the foundation stage of STEM Racing — teaching students how the competition works.
